Troubleshooting

Solutions for Epic FHIR activity errors, including empty results, withheld access, and the status codes Epic returns.

Empty results

The following causes are listed from most to least frequent:

  1. A filter your Epic build does not support for that resource. This is the most common cause. See Filters and search parameters.
  2. An under-specified Patient search. See The minimum data set.
  3. The empty final page of a paged retrieval, which is normal. See Pagination.
  4. The patient genuinely has no records of that type.

Access was withheld

When the app is not authorized for a resource in your environment, Epic responds with HTTP 200, an empty result, and a warning embedded in the response body. To an automation, this is indistinguishable from a patient who has no records of that type.

The connector detects this case and fails the activity with a 403 that names the cause, instead of returning an empty list. To resolve it:

  1. Ask your Epic team to authorize the API for the app in your environment.
  2. Allow time for the change to synchronize.

Status codes

CodeMeaning
400The request is malformed or under-specified, commonly because it does not meet your organization's minimum data set.
401A credentials problem. Check the private key, the kid, the Epic App selection and the token endpoint.
403The app is not authorized for this resource, or your organization's policy prevents access.
404An incorrect FHIR ID, or a base URL pointing at the wrong tenant path.

For failures that occur while creating the connection rather than while running activities, see Connection failures.
