About the Epic FHIR activities

Epic FHIR activities for Integration Service, providing read access to clinical, administrative, and financial data from an Epic instance.

Epic is an electronic health record system used by health systems to store clinical, administrative and financial data. The Epic FHIR activities read that data from your organization's own Epic instance through Epic's Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) R4 APIs, so your automations can work with it in UiPath.

To learn more about the Epic FHIR activities, see the Activities page for a complete list and descriptions. For behavior that applies across all of them, such as paging, filters, limitations and errors, see Technical references.

How it works

To enable the outbound automation between UiPath and Epic, the activities establish an authenticated connection using the UiPath Connector for Epic FHIR. The Epic FHIR authentication guide from the connector documentation covers the steps required before building your first project.

Once established, the connection to the Epic instance can be used in all activities of the package.

The activities are read-only. Which of them return data in your environment depends on which FHIR APIs your Epic team authorized for the app.

Handling protected health information (PHI)

  • Search parameters carry PHI. An identifier filter can contain a plaintext Social Security Number (SSN), so search inputs do not belong in the logs, notifications or error messages your automations produce.
  • Access is governed entirely by what the app is authorized for in your Epic environment. The activities cannot widen or narrow that scope, so the app's authorized API set is worth limiting to what your automations require.
