Build in Studio Desktop

Create a Maestro Automate project in Studio Desktop, build it with Autopilot, then test and deploy it.

Studio Desktop is the UiPath builder that you install on a computer. It also holds RPA (robotic process automation) projects, so workflows and RPA projects can be built in the same application. The Flow canvas, nodes, variables, and debugging are the same in every environment.

Before you start

Studio Desktop needs a UiPath account, as Sign up describes. Where to build compares Studio Desktop with the other environments.

How Studio Desktop works with the Flow canvas

Studio Desktop opens workflows in the same visual editor that Visual Studio Code uses, which is delivered as an extension. Studio Desktop provides its own explorer, so the extension adds the canvas without its own sidebar views. Sign-in is part of Studio Desktop, so a workflow uses the signed-in Studio Desktop session and has no separate sign-in panel.

Workflows can call RPA projects that are cross-platform, which means projects that are not tied to Windows.

The Data category of the Add node panel doesn't include the Data Fabric nodes in Studio Desktop. To read or write Data Fabric records, build the workflow in Studio Web or VS Code.

Create or open a workflow

To create a workflow:

  1. Open a solution in Studio Desktop.
  2. In the Explorer, select Add a project.
  3. Under Add to Solution, select Maestro Automate. Don't select Maestro Flow.

The new project opens on the Flow canvas with a Manual trigger already on it. The bottom toolbar shows Maestro Automate as the build mode.

A project that was created in Studio Web can be synced to Studio Desktop and opened on the canvas.

Build with Autopilot

Studio Desktop has Autopilot (Preview) too, in the Autopilot panel on the right. Describe the workflow, and Autopilot builds it on the canvas.

Test and deploy

The top of the Studio Desktop window has Design and Debug tabs, and the bottom toolbar of the canvas shows the build mode, Maestro Automate.
