Upload SOPs, process diagrams, and other source documents to Cartographer to accelerate the Phase 1 interview.
Uploading documents accelerates the Phase 1 interview by giving Cartographer a starting model of your process before you begin describing it.
Uploading documents does not replace the Phase 1 interview. Cartographer still asks follow-up questions to fill gaps and validate what it inferred. Expect a shorter interview, not an absent one.
What you can upload
| Document type | What Cartographer extracts | Quality note |
|---|---|---|
| SOPs and work instructions | Steps, roles, triggers, systems, decision points | Best source — produces the most complete starting model |
| Process diagrams and flowcharts | Step sequence, decision branches, roles per lane | BPMN and Visio exports work well; hand-drawn photos are lower quality |
| Meeting notes and interview transcripts | Stakeholder context, ad-hoc rules, process intent | Useful supplement; informal language is handled well |
| Application screenshots | UI context, field names, system of record for each step | Especially useful when system names alone are not descriptive |
| Email threads | Approval chains, exception decisions, policy context | Treated as supplementary; Cartographer surfaces key terms |
| Spreadsheets used as process trackers | Step structure inferred from column headers and row patterns | Useful when no formal SOP exists |
| Process mining output diagrams | Steps, decision points, triggers | May be noisy, but often the closest reflection of reality — audit it carefully |
Supported file types are PDF, Word (.docx), PowerPoint (.pptx), images (PNG, JPG), Excel (.xlsx), and plain text. Drag and drop files into the Delegate chat window, or reference them by file path.
How to upload effectively
- Upload the SOP or work instruction first — this gives Cartographer its primary model of the process.
- Upload the process diagram second — it supplements the SOP with visual structure.
- Upload supplementary notes last — meeting notes, email threads, and screenshots add context once the core model exists.
You can upload multiple files in a single message. Drop them all at once and add a short description of what each one is, for example: "Attaching three files: the current SOP (v2.3), a Visio export of the process flow, and notes from last week's stakeholder workshop."
Combining document types produces better results than any single file alone. An SOP plus an application screenshot plus a gap-analysis note gives Cartographer enough material to build a near-complete starting model.
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Document is password-protected | Remove the password before uploading — Cartographer cannot read encrypted files |
| Document is a scanned PDF without OCR | Run OCR first, for example with Adobe Acrobat or Microsoft Lens, and re-save before uploading |
| SOP is out of date | Upload it, but flag the version conflict explicitly, for example: "This SOP is from 2022; steps 4–6 have changed, I'll describe the current versions during the interview." |
| Multiple versions of the same SOP | Upload the most recent version and describe version differences conversationally |
| Document contains PII or sensitive data | Redact it before uploading, and check your organization's data handling policy before uploading any patient, financial, or HR data to an AI system. If your organization has enabled it as part of its data handling policies, the UiPath AI Trust Layer filters PII out. |
| No documents available | Start the interview without uploads — Cartographer asks more questions and still drives to a quality output. |
What Cartographer shows you after processing
- A summary of what it found — the steps, systems, roles, and rules it was able to extract.
- A list of gaps it will probe — areas where the source material was unclear or incomplete.
- A request to confirm or correct its interpretation before the interview continues.
Review this summary carefully. Correcting a misinterpretation at this stage takes seconds. Correcting it after the Process Design Document (PDD) is generated takes longer.
